In the photo, a vulture sits waiting for the death of a skinny child, as if it will pounce on the target once it is dead! The photo was taken by South African photographer Kevin Carter.

March 1993. Famine-stricken Sudan. There is not a single grain anywhere. The child, suffering from hunger, was walking towards the UN food warehouse half a mile from the city of Ayodhya in search of a handful of food.
At one point, he sat down with his dead body, his head on the ground.
Just then, a vulture came and waited with greedy eyes to eat the baby’s flesh.

When this photo was published in The New York Times, it caused a worldwide uproar. The picture won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Feature Photography in 1994.
But photographer Kevin Carter committed suicide at the age of 33, just four months after winning the prize. It was later revealed that he had been suffering from a mental breakdown since taking the picture! Before his death, Kevin Carter wrote in his diary about the picture:

“O Most Merciful, I promise not to waste any food, no matter how bad it tastes, even if I am not hungry!

I pray that we will be more sensitive to the world around us and that we will not be blinded by our own selfishness and narrow-mindedness.

I also pray that you will protect that little boy, guide him, and relieve him of his suffering. May this picture remind people how fortunate they are compared to that child, because without your mercy, not a single grain of food can be added to anyone’s destiny. Farewell!”
